Euro 2020 Spain goes to the European Championship without their captain Sergio Ramos. The Real Madrid defender is not in top condition due to injury treatment and although he has time to fully recover, coach Luis Enrique has decided not to rely on him.

Due to injuries and poor form, the 35-year-old central defender has played in only 7 games since the beginning of the calendar year, which is probably why the coach decided that he was not needed.

It is interesting that in the selection of the Spaniards there is no Real Madrid player at all, while those from Barcelona are three – Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba and Pedri.

Instead of Ramos, Aymeric Laporte, who is naturalized these days, is called, who is French, but his grandparents are Basque. In the attack, the inclusion of Adama Traoré from Wolverhampton is impressive. Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga is also out and Roma’s goalkeeper Pau López is injured.

It is strange that Luis Enrique chose only 24 players, although as a rule he is entitled to 26. In the finals, “La Roja” is in a group with Sweden, Poland and Slovakia, starting with the matches on June 14 against the Scandinavians.

Euro 2020 Spain – Luis Enrique explained his decision for Ramos

“It was not an easy decision, but it was very well thought out,” explained the former Barcelona coach. – I spoke to him personally at the halftime of Real Madrid – Sevilla, and then I just wanted to know what physical condition he is in. Yesterday I already told him the news that he will not be in the team. It is obvious that since January it has been difficult for him to play constantly at a high level due to his injuries.

It was hard for me to tell him that because he had been on top for many years. It’s also clear that everything is in the name of the team – ie. we must bet on the most prepared

I advised Sergio to be selfish and to think mainly about his own health, so that he could fully recover and continue to play for his club team and for the national team. There is certainly time for him to get in shape by the start of the EP, but I think that would be difficult. Many players helped us qualify, but some of them were not called up either – Nacho Fernandez, Daniel Carvajal, Sergio Canales, Serge Roberto, Mikel Merino. “
